Human Heredity and Health in Africa (H3Africa) Conference

The H3Africa conference was well attended with representation from all the major regions of the African continent. The conference opened with an official welcome from the Honorable Minister of Health for the Republic of South Africa, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi. Speeches were also delivered by Ms. Naledi Pandor (Minister of Science and Technology for the Republic of South Africa), Dr. Francis Collins (Director, NIH), Sir Mark Walport (Director, Wellcome Trust) and Professor Abdullah Daar. Drs. Eric Green (Director, NHGRI) and Pat Goodwin (Special Advisor, Pathogens, Immunology and Population Health, Wellcome Trust) provided the funders' perspective on the H3Africa program with some background information and a proposed timeline for funding. Discussions at the conference were extremely productive and will guide the H3Africa funders as they move forward with implementation of the program.
