I am a Senior Researcher at the Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) and serve as head of the Mycobacterial Diseases Research Directorate. I have been working for the AHRI since 2003. My research interests are focused on infectious diseases, specifically mycobacterial diseases including tuberculosis and leprosy. A major focus of my research has been on immunodiagnostics research where we profile and analyze host immunological responses against mycobacterial antigens, search for potential biomarkers, and develop field-friendly diagnostic tests. I am actively involved in a number of translational research and operational research projects focused on leprosy and tuberculosis. I am also committed to research training and serve as a mentor for a number of Ph.D. and MSc students carrying out their research at AHRI. I have served as Associate Director of the Ethiopia-Emory TB Research Training program (EETB-RTP) since 2018 and have collaborated on the EETB-RTP since the initiation of the project. I also serve as a co-investigator for the ongoing NIH NIAID-funded TBRU ASTRa project. As of February 2020, I serve as PI for the H3Africa TBGEN (\u201cAn integrated approach to unraveling susceptibility to tuberculosis in Africa\u201d) project I also have an interest in research ethics in low and middle-income countries including Ethiopia. I previously served as secretary of the AHRI\/ALERT IRB and as a member of the National (Ethiopian) Ethics Review Committee. I also played the leading role in the establishment of the histocompatibility lab at AHRI.<\/p>\n
