Dr Thomas Kariuki is Executive Director of the Science for Africa (SFA) Foundation. The Science for Africa Foundation is a non-profit, pan-African organisation, that aims to support, strengthen and promote science and innovation in Africa. The SFA foundation serves the African research ecosystem by funding excellent research and innovative ideas and building and reinforcing environments that are conducive for scientists to thrive and produce quality research that impacts development.
Dr Kariuki previously served as the Director of Programmes for the Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA) and Director of a Biomedical facility, the Institute of Primate Research / National Museums of Kenya where he established his infectious immunology research group. As an Immunologist, Dr Kariuki’s research interests have spanned the immunology of neglected infectious diseases and he has been deeply involved in global efforts to develop vaccines, drugs and diagnostics for poverty-related diseases. He has published widely on vaccines and diagnostics development for schistosomiasis (Bilharzia), malaria and co-infections and on policy issues related to biomedical research and funding.
