Dr. Frederick Nakwagala

Clinical Head of the Directorate of Medicine at Mulago Hospital

 


Dr. Nakwagala is the Clinical Head of the Directorate of Medicine at Mulago Hospital in Uganda. He is also faculty in the Department of Medicine of the College of Health Sciences at Makerere University. He is involved in teaching undergraduates and post graduates including supervision of research for post graduate theses. As Clinical Head of the Directorate of Medicine, he is directly responsible for the supervision of all clinical units and reports to the Executive Director of Mulago Hospital. He is currently co-investigator for the multicentre Peers for progress studies for Diabetes Mellitus. Dr. Nakwagala conducted research on HIV and Hepatitis B co-infection in Mulago Hospital during his training in Internal Medicine at Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. He then received his MA in Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University in the United States. Following this, he participated in conducting HIV Vaccine Trials at Uganda Virus Research Institute under the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative for four years. He has been active on four Institutional Review Committees over the last seven years serving in various capacities. He has been a resource person for the National regulatory body for Research in the country, the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology, where he has participated in revising national guidelines for the conduct of research. Dr. Nakwagala is also Chair of the Forgarty Bioethics Working Group of the Uganda Society for Health Scientists. Under this Working group, a curriculum for training Ugandans in research ethics has been developed and courses have been rolled out.
