Robert Turner Professor of Diabetes, University of Oxford; Chairman and Head of the Oxford Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism

 

Mark McCarthy, M.A., M.B., B.Chir., M.D. is currently Robert Turner Professor of Diabetes at the University of Oxford, Chairman of the Oxford Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism and a group head at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics. He is trained (and still practices) as a diabetologist, endocrinologist and internist. However, following research training in the UK and the United States, his main focus lies in using human genetic discovery as a tool for developing an improved understanding of the biological basis of common diseases including type 2 diabetes and obesity. He plays a leading role in major research efforts in this area including the UK-based Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium and the more global T2D-GENES Consortium.

Dr. McCarthy holds medical degrees from the University of Cambridge and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the Society of Biology and the Academy of Medical Sciences.
