Sir Mark Walport, director of the Wellcome Trust, will deliver the 12th annual David E. Barmes Global Health Lecture at the National Institutes of Health. Walport, recently named the United Kingdom’s next chief science adviser, has titled his talk “Global Health: from John Snow to Genome Science.” He will discuss the power of genetics in understanding infectious diseases and explore how global health can best be supported. British physician John Snow is considered to be one of the fathers of modern epidemiology and is renowned for his work tracing the source of an 1854 cholera outbreak in London to a single water pump.
