Dr. Onesmo K. Ole-MoiYoi

Senior Visiting Scientist, International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology, Senior Consultant, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Aga Khan University and Medical School Chairman, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute

 

Onesmo K. ole-MoiYoi, a 2003 winner of the Kilby International Award, is the chairman of the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute (KARI). He served as chairman of the Kenyatta University Council for 17 years and was recently the Director of Research and Partnerships at the International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), in Nairobi, where he is a senior visiting scientist with interests in developing a holistic approach for the control of malaria and a better understanding of the pathophysiology and therapy of hypertension, which has increasingly become a major health hazard in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).

Dr. ole-MoiYoi was coordinator of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Laboratory at the International Livestock Research Institute, where he led the Program on Pathophysiology and Genetics. In 2007, he completed two cycles as a member of the Science Council of the Consultative Group of International Agriculture (CGIAR) and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the University of California’s System-Wide Global Health Institute. He is also chair of the International Scientific Advisory Board of the South African Centre for Infectious Disease Surveillance (SACIDS).

Dr. ole-MoiYoi held an assistant professorship and a Capps’ Scholar position at Harvard Medical School and a visiting professorship at the Harvard School of Public Health in the 1980s and 1990s. He was elected to the Human Genome Organization (HUGO) in 1991 and was a member of the Biodiversity and Bioinformatics committees of HUGO.

Dr. ole-MoiYoi graduated from Harvard College (1968), where he was a Harvard Aga Khan Scholar, and from Harvard Medical School (1972).
